School Board Updates graphic with a blue background and text.Dear Charlottesville City Schools community,

This Thursday, April 16, the School Board will be holding a work session on the topic of School Resource Officers (SRO) in Charlottesville City Schools at 5pm at the Booker T. Reaves Media Center at CHS (virtual attendance options are also available). Currently, the division’s plan is for an SRO program to begin at CHS and CMS this August, with one officer per school, selected jointly by the Charlottesville Police Department (CPD) and the schools.

In our slide deck for this meeting, you’ll find a review of six years of work pertaining to school safety at Charlottesville City Schools, including:

  • What we currently have in place for school safety and what role SROs would play
  • Community feedback around both the 2020 decision to remove SROs and the 2025 decision to bring them back
  • How community feedback impacted the final 2025 SRO Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with CPD
  • Frequently asked questions

There are two things I know about school safety: It is complex, and it takes the whole community. We hope you will continue being a part of this conversation.

Sincerely,
Dr. G
